He said: Al-Ḥakam ibn al-Qāsim related to me, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Ḥakīm, who said:
A man said, “I dreamed that ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān was urinating in the qiblah of the Prophet’s Mosque four times.” I mentioned this to Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, and he replied, “If your vision is true, four caliphs will arise from his loins.” (1)
ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥafṣ informed us, from Sharīk ibn Abī Namir:
I said to Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, “I dreamed that my teeth fell into my hand and that I buried them.” He said, “If your dream is true, you will bury the members of your own household.” (2)
Ibn Abī Dhīb narrated to us, from Muslim al-Ḥannāṭ (3):
A man said to Ibn al-Musayyib, “I saw myself urinating into my own hand.” He answered, “Fear Allah, for beneath you is a woman who is unlawful for you to marry.” The man investigated and discovered that there was between them a milk-kinship. (2)
With this same chain: another man came and said, “I saw as though I were urinating at the root of an olive tree.” He replied, “You are in the presence of a blood relative.” The man looked into it and found the matter exactly as foretold. (2)
A man said to him, “I dreamed that a dove alighted on the minaret.” He said, “Al-Ḥajjāj will marry the daughter of ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar.” (4)
And, on Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib’s authority: “Shackles in a dream signify steadfastness in religion.”
Someone said to him, “O Abū Muḥammad, I dreamed that I was in the shade and then stood in the sunlight.” He replied, “If your vision is true, you will certainly leave Islam.”
He said, “O Abū Muḥammad, I see myself…"
