the Friday congregational prayer, and he would leave only at night.

Account of His Ordeal
Al-Wāqidī related: ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar—and others among our companions—told us:
When Ibn al-Zubayr appointed Jābir ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī as governor of Medina, Jābir summoned the people to pledge allegiance to Ibn al-Zubayr. Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib said, “No, not until the people are united.” So Jābir gave him sixty lashes. News of this reached Ibn al-Zubayr, who wrote to Jābir, rebuking him and saying, “What concern have we with Saʿīd? Leave him alone.” (2)
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn reported:
Jābir ibn al-Aswad—the governor of Medina for Ibn al-Zubayr—had married a fifth wife before the waiting period of the fourth had ended. When he flogged Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, Saʿīd shouted at him while the lashes were falling:
“By Allah, you have not acted in accordance with the Book of Allah! You married a fifth wife before the waiting period of the fourth was over. It is only a matter of a few nights—do as you please, but something you detest will soon come upon you.”
Hardly any time passed before Ibn al-Zubayr was killed. (3)
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar—and others—narrated to us that ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān died
