Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb and ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim related: Salām ibn Miskīn narrated to us from ʿImrān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭalḥah al-Khuzāʿī, who said:

When ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān performed the pilgrimage and reached Medina, he halted at the door of the mosque and sent a man to summon Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, instructing him not to force him from his place. The messenger came and said, “Respond to the Commander of the Believers. He is standing at the door and wishes to speak with you.”
Saʿīd replied, “The Commander of the Believers has no need of me, nor I of him; and whatever need he imagines he has concerning me will not be fulfilled.”
The messenger returned and reported this. ʿAbd al-Malik said, “Go back and tell him: I only want to talk with you—do not alarm him.”
The envoy went back and repeated the request, but Saʿīd answered exactly as before.
The man retorted, “Had he not cautioned me about you, I would have brought him your head! The Commander of the Believers sends for you to speak with you, and you give such a reply!”
Saʿīd said, “If he wants to do me good, that is up to you; but if he intends otherwise, I shall not even loosen the fold of my garment until he has carried out what he means to do.”
The messenger conveyed this, whereupon ʿAbd al-Malik said, “May Allah have mercy on Abū Muḥammad; he will settle for nothing but firmness.” (1)

ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim added, with the same chain:
When al-Walīd succeeded to the caliphate, he came to Medina, entered the mosque, and saw an elderly man around whom people had gathered. He asked, “Who is that?”
They replied, “Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib.”
After he sat down, he sent for him. The messenger came and said, “Answer the Commander of the Believers.”
Saʿīd said, “Perhaps you have mistaken my name, or perhaps he meant to summon someone else.”
The messenger went back and informed al-Walīd, who became angry and resolved to act against him.
People were living in fear at that time, so they came forward and said, “O Commander of the Believers, he is the jurist of Medina, the elder of Quraysh, and your father’s close friend. No ruler before you ever dared bring him into his presence.”
They persisted until al-Walīd turned away from him (2).

ʿImrān ibn ʿAbd Allāh—one of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib’s companions—said, “I never knew in him…"
