The judge related: Abū Yaʿlā al-Tamīmī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Wasāwasī narrated to us; Ḍumrah narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of Umm Hānī, from Umm Hānī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to me while it was still dark before dawn and I was lying on my bed. He said, “Do you know that I slept last night in the Sacred Mosque? Gabriel came to me and led me to the gate of the Mosque. There I saw a white mount, larger than a donkey yet smaller than a mule, its ears twitching. I mounted it, and it would set its hoof as far as its eye could see. When we descended, its forelegs lengthened and its hind-legs shortened; when we ascended, its hind-legs lengthened and its forelegs shortened. Gabriel kept pace with me until we reached Jerusalem. I tethered it to the ring to which the prophets used to fasten their mounts. Then a group of prophets was gathered for me—among them Abraham, Moses, and Jesus—and I led them in prayer and spoke with them. Two vessels were brought to me, one red and one white; I drank from the white one. Gabriel said, ‘You have drunk the milk and left the wine. Had you chosen the wine, your community would have apostasized.’ After that I rode the mount back to the Sacred Mosque and there I performed the dawn prayer.”
Umm Hānī continued: I clutched his cloak and said, “I adjure you by Allah, cousin, do not tell this to Quraysh, for those who believe you now will deny you.” He struck his hand against his cloak, pulled it free from my grasp, and it rose from his abdomen. I saw the folds of flesh above his waist-wrapper, lying like parchment scrolls, and a brilliant light was shining at his chest that almost snatched away my sight. I fell down in prostration, and when I raised my head he had gone. I said to my maid Nabʿah, “Woe to you, follow him and see.”
When she returned she told me that he had reached Quraysh in the area of al-Ḥaṭīm, where al-Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdī, ʿAmr ibn Hishām, and al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah were gathered. He narrated his night journey to them, and ʿAmr, mocking, said, “Describe them to me.” He replied, “As for Jesus, he is slightly above medium height, broad-chested, with a ruddy complexion, curly hair tinged with a light blondness; he resembles ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd al-Thaqafī. As for Moses, he is tall, dark-skinned and powerfully built, as though he were from …”
