Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and the leader of the Successors in his day. He was born two years after the beginning of ʿUmar’s caliphate—others say four years after—in Medina. He saw ʿUmar and heard from ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, Zayd ibn Thābit, Abū Mūsā, Saʿd, ʿĀʾishah, Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, Muḥammad ibn Maslamah, Umm Salamah, and many others. Some maintain that he actually heard from ʿUmar as well.

He transmitted mursal reports from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, and likewise from Bilāl, Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, Abū Dharr, and Abū al-Dardāʾ. His narrations from ʿAlī, Saʿd, ʿUthmān, Abū Mūsā, ʿĀʾishah, Umm Sharīk, Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, his father al-Musayyab, and Abū Saʿīd appear in both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, while his reports from Ḥassān ibn Thābit, Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah, Maʿmar ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Muʿāwiyah, and Umm Salamah are found only in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. His narrations from Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, Jābir, and others are cited by al-Bukhārī, and those from ʿUmar occur in the Four Sunan.

He also related from Zayd ibn Thābit, Surāqah ibn Mālik, Ṣuhayb, al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Sufyān, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUthmān al-Taymī. His narration from ʿAttāb ibn Asīd—found in the Four Sunan—is mursal, and he likewise sent mursal reports attributed to the Prophet and to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq. He was the husband of Abū Hurayrah’s daughter and the most knowledgeable person regarding her father’s ḥadīth.

A great many scholars transmitted from him, among them: Idrīs ibn Ṣabīḥ, Usāmah ibn Zayd al-Laythī, Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah, Bashīr (1), ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Harmalah, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī, ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn Suhayl, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Sulaymān al-ʿAbdī, ʿUthmān ibn Ḥakīm, ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, and ʿUqbah
