Abū Khaldah said: I heard Abū al-ʿĀliyah say, “Learn the Qur’an five verses at a time, five verses at a time; that will help you preserve it. Gabriel used to bring it down in portions of five verses at a time.” (1)
Qutaybah narrated: Jarīr related to us, from Mughīrah, who said, “The first person to give the adhān in Transoxiana was Abū al-ʿĀliyah al-Riyāḥī.” (2)
Abū Khaldah also said: Whenever visitors entered upon Abū al-ʿĀliyah, he would greet them warmly and recite, “When those who believe in Our revelations come to you, say: ‘Peace be upon you.’” (al-Anʿām 6:54). (3)
Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab transmitted from Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, from al-Rabīʿ, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, who said: “Allah has taken it upon Himself that:
• Whoever believes in Him, He will guide him—proof of this is in the Book of Allah: ‘Whoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart’ (al-Taghābun 64:11).
• Whoever puts his trust in Him, He will suffice him—‘Whoever relies upon Allah, He will suffice him’ (al-Ṭalāq 65:3).
• Whoever lends to Him, He will repay him—‘Who is it that will lend Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?’ (al-Baqarah 2:245).
• Whoever seeks refuge from His punishment, He will grant him refuge—‘Hold fast, all of you, to the rope of Allah’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:103); holding fast means placing one’s trust in Allah.
• Whoever calls upon Him, He will answer him—‘When My servants ask you about Me, I am indeed near; I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me’ (al-Baqarah 2:186).” (4)
