85 – Abū al-ʿĀliyah, Rufayʿ ibn Mihrān al-Riyāhī al-Baṣrī * (ʿ)
The imām, Qur’an reciter, ḥadith master, and exegete—Abū al-ʿĀliyah al-Riyāhī, the Basran—was one of the leading authorities.
He had been the client of a woman from the clan of Riyāḥ ibn Yarbūʿ, and later of Banū Tamīm.
He lived during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime while still a young man; he embraced Islam in the caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and was admitted to see him.
He heard hadith from ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ubayy, Abū Dharr, Ibn Masʿūd, ʿĀʾishah, Abū Mūsā, Abū Ayyūb, Ibn ʿAbbās, Zayd ibn Thābit, and many others.
He memorised the Qur’an and recited it to Ubayy ibn Kaʿb. Thereafter he took a prominent seat for teaching, and his fame spread far and wide.
Among those said to have read the Qur’an to him was Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, and that is by no means unlikely, for he too was a Tamīmī.
