81 – Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī *
A learned, reliable ḥadith master, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī, of the Aḥmas branch and originally from Kufa.
His father’s name was Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAwf; some say it was ʿAwf ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAwf ibn Ḥushaysh ibn Hilāl. Opinions differ over his exact lineage. Bajīlah are counted among the descendants of Anmār.
Qays accepted Islam and set out to meet the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to pledge allegiance, but the Messenger of Allah died while Qays was still on the road. His father, Abū Ḥāzim, did attain Companionship.
Others have claimed that Qays himself was also a Companion, yet this is not firmly established.
He was regarded as one of the scholars of his age.
He transmitted hadith from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, ʿAmmār, Ibn Masʿūd, Khālid, al-Zubayr, Khabbāb, Ḥudhayfah, Muʿādh, Ṭalḥah, Saʿd, Saʿīd ibn Zayd, ʿĀʾishah, Abū Mūsā, ʿAmr, Muʿāwiyah, al-Mughīrah, Bilāl, Jarīr, ʿAdī ibn ʿUmayrah, ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, Abū Masʿūd ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmr, and many others.
= “He will grant you whatever you ask: do you wish the marriage to go ahead or to be refused?” They answered: “We prefer to marry and to be treated generously.”
When al-Hajjaj decided to divorce her, he told Ibn al-Qariyya to go to her, pronounce the divorce in two brief words and give her a compensation of ten thousand dirhams. He went and said to her: “Al-Hajjaj tells you: ‘You were married—now you are released; here are ten thousand dirhams as your maintenance.’” She replied: “Tell him: ‘While we were together you never earned our praise, and now that we are apart we feel no regret; these ten thousand are yours as a reward for bringing me the good news of my divorce.’” (Uyun al-Akhbar, 2/209)
