Account of the Night Journey (isrāʾ) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā:
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reported on the authority of al-Zuhrī: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey to Bayt al-Maqdis one year before the Hijrah.
Ibn Lahiʿah likewise narrated it from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah.
Abū Ismāʿīl al-Tirmidhī said: Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Zubaydī ibn Zibriq related to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim, from al-Zubaydī Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd; he said: al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told us that Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: Shaddād ibn Aws narrated, saying:
“We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how were you taken on the Night Journey?’ He replied:
‘I led my Companions in the late-night prayer (ʿatamah) in Mecca when the night had grown dark. Gabriel then came to me with a white mount, larger than a donkey yet smaller than a mule, and said, “Ride.” The animal balked, so he stroked its ear and then seated me upon it. Off we sped, its hoof landing wherever its gaze reached, until we came to a land with date-palms. He made me dismount and said, “Pray.” I prayed. We mounted again and he asked, “Do you know where you have prayed?” I replied, “Allah knows best.” He said, “You prayed at Yathrib—at Taybah.”
‘We travelled on, the mount placing its hoof wherever its gaze reached, until we came to another land. He said, “Dismount and pray,” which I did. After we mounted he asked, “Do you know where you prayed?” I said, “Allah knows best.” He said, “You prayed at Midian, near the Tree of Moses.”
‘Then we sped on, the mount placing its hoof wherever its gaze reached, until we arrived at a land where palaces were visible. He said, “Dismount,” and I prayed…’
