Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

from Thābit al-Bunānī and another companion: the two of them came in to see Mutarrif while he was unconscious. He said: Three beams of light suddenly burst forth with him—one from his head, one from his torso, and one from his legs—and the sight startled us. When he regained consciousness we asked, “How are you, Abū ʿAbd Allāh?”
He replied, “Well.”
Someone said, “We witnessed something that frightened us.”
He asked, “And what was it?”
We said, “Lights flashed from you.”
He asked, “Did you really see that?”
They answered, “Yes.”
He said, “That was Tanzīl al-Sajdah; it is twenty-nine verses long. The beginning of it shone from my head, its middle from my mid-section, and its end from my feet. It has been given form and is interceding for me. It is a thawābiyyah— a reward-bearing surah—standing guard over me.” ⦗1⦘

Muhammad ibn Wāsiʿ narrated that Mutarrif used to say: “O Allah, be pleased with us; and if You are not pleased with us, then pardon us. A master may pardon his servant while still not being pleased with him.” ⦗2⦘

And it is related from Mutarrif that he once said to one of his brothers, “Abū So-and-so, if you have a request of me, do not speak to me about it; write it on a slip of paper, for I dislike seeing the humiliation of entreaty on your face.” ⦗3⦘

Abū al-Tayyāḥ narrated from Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh that Yazīd’s brother instructed in his will that no one be notified of his funeral. ⦗4⦘

Yazīd, the brother of Mutarrif, was among the trustworthy Followers and lived on for several years after his brother.

Ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated from Qatādah, from Mutarrif, who said: “I met ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—and he said to me, ‘Abū ʿAbd Allāh, what has kept you away? Your love for ʿUthmān?’ Then he added, ‘If that is what you say, he was certainly the most dutiful of us in maintaining kinship ties and the most devoted of us to the Lord.’”

Mahdī ibn Maymūn reported that Mutarrif said, “Fear of the Fire has nearly prevented me from asking Allah for Paradise.” ⦗5⦘
