has spoiled the bliss of the blissful, so seek a bliss in which there is no death. (1)
Hammād ibn Zayd narrated from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Mutarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“It is not permissible for anyone to climb up and hurl himself from a height and then say, ‘My Lord had decreed this for me.’ Rather, he must be cautious, strive, and guard himself; then, if something befalls him, he knows that nothing could have struck him except what Allah had written for him.” (2)
Ghīlān ibn Jarīr narrated from Mutarrif that he said:
“Do not say, ‘For Allah says …’; instead say, ‘Allah—Exalted is He—said … .’
He also said, “A man may lie twice: he is asked, ‘What is this?’ and he replies, ‘Nothing—only a thing that is nothing.’” (3)
Abū ʿAqīl Bashīr ibn ʿUqbah said: I asked Yazīd ibn al-Shikhkhīr, “What would Mutarrif do when the people were in turmoil?”
He replied, “He would remain in the innermost part of his house and would not attend either their Friday prayer or their public gatherings until the disturbance subsided.” (4)
Ayyūb reported that Mutarrif said:
“To take the sure course by staying at home is dearer to me than to seek the additional merit of jihad by exposing myself to danger.” (5)
Ghīlān ibn Jarīr said: “Mutarrif used to wear burnouses and fine mantles, ride horses, and visit the authorities; yet when you were alone with him you found yourself with the delight of your eyes.” (6)
Maslamah ibn Ibrāhīm said: “Abū Ṭalḥah Bishr ibn Kathīr narrated to us; he said: ‘She narrated to me …’”
