Sawsan of Iraq had formerly been a Christian; he embraced Islam, then reverted to Christianity, and Maʿbad took his views from him.
Ghaylan the Qadari then received those views from Maʿbad. (1)
Muhammad ibn Himyar said, “Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Alhani narrated to us:
‘We were in the mosque when Maʿbad al-Juhani was being escorted to ʿAbd al-Malik. The people exclaimed, “This is the calamity!”’
Khalid ibn Maʿdan replied, ‘The calamity—every bit of it—is when the leaders are chosen from such men.’ (2)
Marhum al-ʿAttar said, ‘My father and my uncle related to us that they heard al-Hasan say: “Beware of Maʿbad al-Juhani, for he is astray and leads others astray.”’
Yunus said, ‘I heard al-Hasan censuring Maʿbad’s doctrine. Later Maʿbad approached him gently and planted in his heart whatever he planted.’
Tawus said, ‘Beware of Maʿbad’s teaching, for he was a Qadari (a denier of the divine decree).’
Malik ibn Dinar said, ‘I met Maʿbad in Mecca after the rebellion of Ibn al-Ashʿath; he was wounded, for he had fought al-Hajjaj in every engagement.’ (3)
Damrah narrated from Sadaqah ibn Yazid who said, ‘Al-Hajjaj inflicted every kind of torture on Maʿbad al-Juhani, but he never flinched; then he killed him.’
Khalifah (4) said, ‘He died before 90 AH.’
Saʿid ibn ʿUfayr said, ‘In the year 80 AH, ʿAbd al-Malik crucified Maʿbad al-Juhani in Damascus.’
I (the author) say: It seems he crucified him and then released him.
