75 – The Aʿshā of Hamdān, ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Hamdani*
A celebrated, eloquent poet from Kufa. He was Abū al-Muṣabbiḥ ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith al-Hamdani. At first he was a devout, upright worshipper, but he later took up poetry and praised al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashir, who favored him and raised for him, from the Hims garrison, forty thousand dinars. After that al-Aʿshā joined the Qur’an-reciters in Ibn al-Ashʿath’s revolt. He had married al-Shaʿbī’s sister, while al-Shaʿbī had married his. Al-Hajjaj had him executed in the early eighties AH.
76 – Maʿbad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUwaymir al-Juhani* (Q)
Some said he was Maʿbad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUkaym al-Juhani. A resident of Basra, he was the first to speak about al-qadar (divine decree) during the lifetime of the Companions. He related hadiths from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, Muʿāwiyah, Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, Ḥumrān ibn Abān, and others. Although tainted by this innovation, he was reckoned among the scholars of his age. Among those who transmitted from him were Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah, Zayd ibn Rufayʿ, Qatādah, Mālik ibn Dīnār, ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī, Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, and many others.
