Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He said, “Go and bury him.” In the version where Nājiya explicitly states that he heard the narration, he says, “I was present when ʿAlī said it”; this is a good, uninterrupted chain.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs said: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq related to us, from someone who told him, from ʿUrwa ibn al-Zubayr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, who said: “When Abū Ṭālib died, an insolent man from Quraysh confronted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and threw dust on him. He returned home, and his daughter began wiping the dust from his face while she wept. He kept saying, ‘My little daughter, do not weep, for Allah will protect your father,’ and in between he added, ‘Quraysh never did anything to me that I disliked until Abū Ṭālib died.’” This is a singular report with a missing Companion.

It is also narrated from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Prophet ﷺ walked alongside the bier of Abū Ṭālib and said, “You kept the bonds of kinship, my uncle, and may you be well rewarded.” This report is transmitted solely by Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Khwārazmī.

He is a transmitter whose ḥadīth are rejected; ʿĪsā Ghunjār and al-Faḍl al-Sīnānī are among those who narrate from him.

Yūnus ibn Bukayr reported from Ibn Isḥāq: al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿbad told me, from some of his family, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Abū Ṭālib during his final illness, he said, ‘My uncle, say: Lā ilāha illā Allāh, so that I may seek intercession for you with it on the Day of Resurrection.’ He replied, ‘My nephew, by Allah, were it not that people would reproach you and your family after me—claiming that I only said it out of panic when death overtook me—I would say it; I would say it only to please you.’ When Abū Ṭālib’s condition worsened he was seen moving his lips, so al-ʿAbbās leaned close to hear what he was saying, then he straightened up and said, ‘O Messenger…’ (and the report continues).
