Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿIjlī said: “Abū Isḥāq heard only four hadiths from al-Ḥārith; everything else he transmitted from him came out of a notebook he had obtained.”
Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh reported, on the authority of Mughīrah: “Al-Ḥārith was not regarded as trustworthy when he related hadith from ʿAlī.”
Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said: “He was a fabricator.”
Ibn Maʿīn, in yet a third statement attributed to him, declared: “He is weak,” and al-Dāraquṭnī said the same.
Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī remarked: “Most of what he narrates is not sound.”
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān narrated from Sufyān that he preferred the reports of ʿĀṣim ibn Ḍamrah to those of al-Ḥārith, saying, “We used to recognize the superiority of ʿĀṣim’s hadith over al-Ḥārith’s.”
ʿUthmān al-Dārimī observed: “No one concurs with Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn’s verdict that al-Ḥārith is reliable.”
Ḥuṣayn related from al-Shaʿbī: “No one in this community has had more lies attributed to him than ʿAlī.”
Al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Muhalhil transmitted from Mughīrah that he heard al-Shaʿbī say, “Al-Ḥārith al-Aʿwar narrated to me, and I testify that he is one of the liars.”
Bundār said: “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd and Ibn Mahdī took the pen out of my hand and struck out roughly forty hadith that al-Ḥārith had narrated from ʿAlī.”
Abū Ḥātim ibn Ḥibbān stated: “Al-Ḥārith was extreme in his Shiʿite leanings and weak in hadith. He is the sole transmitter of the report in which ʿAlī says that the Prophet ﷺ told him: ‘Do not prompt the imam during the prayer.’ It was narrated by al-Firyābī from Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, from his father, from al-Ḥārith.” (1)
In reality, this statement goes back only to ʿAlī himself, not to the Prophet.
