—Nor is the garment of life a robe of honour,
and so the pen is folded when it meets the meek;—
The road to death is the end of every living soul,
and its herald summons all the people of the earth;
Whoever is not struck down outright will merely grow old and weary,
until the Fates deliver him to extinction;
There is no benefit for a man in living
once he is counted among the cast-off trifles of this world. (1)
