Muslim.
Abu ʿAwanah transmitted from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal, from al-ʿAbbās, who said: “Messenger of Allah, have you benefited Abū Ṭālib in any way? He used to shelter you and grow angry for your sake.” He answered, “Yes. He is in a mere shallow pool of the Fire; had it not been for me, he would be in the lowest depth of the Fire.” The two Imams recorded it, and the two Sufyāns narrated the same wording from ʿAbd al-Malik.
Al-Layth related from Ibn al-Hād, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Khabbāb, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say—when his uncle Abū Ṭālib was mentioned in his presence—“Perhaps my intercession will benefit him on the Day of Resurrection, so that he will be placed in a shallow pool of Fire reaching his ankles, from which his brain will boil.” The two Imams recorded it.
Ḥammād ibn Salamah reported from Thābit, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The lightest punishment suffered by any inhabitant of the Fire is that of Abū Ṭālib: he will wear two sandals of Fire from which his brain will boil.” Muslim.
Al-Thawrī and others narrated from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah ibn Kaʿb, from ʿAlī (may Allah honor his face), who said: “When Abū Ṭālib died, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Your misguided old uncle has died.’ He replied, ‘Go and bury your father, and do not do anything else until you return to me.’ I went and buried him, then came back; he instructed me to perform a full ritual bath, after which he supplicated for me with prayers that I would not exchange for anything on earth.” Al-Ṭayālisī included it in his Musnad from Shuʿbah on the authority of Abū Isḥāq, who added after ‘Go and bury him’: “So I said, ‘He died a polytheist.’”
