Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Safwān ibn ʿAmr transmitted from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir who said:

Muʿāwiyah once went out to perform the rain-prayer. When he had taken his seat upon the minbar (pulpit) he announced, “Where is Yazīd ibn al-Aswad?”

The people called out to him, and he came forward, making his way through them. Muʿāwiyah told him to ascend the minbar, and he did so.

Muʿāwiyah then said, “O Allah, we seek Your favor through the best and most virtuous among us—Yazīd ibn al-Aswad. Yazīd, raise your hands to Allah.”

So he raised his hands, and the people raised theirs. It was only moments before a cloud like a shield gathered, a wind blew, and rain fell upon us so heavily that people almost failed to reach their homes.

Abū al-Yamān heard this report from Safwān. (1)

Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and others added: Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays also invoked rain through Yazīd ibn al-Aswad, and they had scarcely finished before they were granted rain. (2)

Al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Bakkār narrated from Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd who said:

Some of the elders told me that Yazīd ibn al-Aswad al-Jurashī was traveling through Byzantine lands with another man when he heard a voice calling out,

“O Yazīd, you are indeed among those brought near, and your companion is among the devout worshippers. We do not speak falsely.” (3)

Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz also said: When ʿAbd al-Malik marched against Muṣʿab, Yazīd ibn al-Aswad accompanied him. As the two armies met, he supplicated,

“O Allah, place a barrier between these two mountain ranges and give victory to the one dearest to You,” and ʿAbd al-Malik prevailed. (4)

Ibn ʿAsākir related: I was informed that Yazīd would perform the late night prayer in the Great Mosque of Damascus, then walk out to Zibdīn; his right thumb would shine, and he would continue in its light all the way to the village. (5)

Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ attended him at the time of his death.
