43 – Yazīd ibn al-Aswad al-Jurashī
He was one of the leading Successors in Syria. He lived in al-Ghūṭa, in the village of Zibdīn, (4) and he embraced Islam while the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was still alive. He also owned a house inside Bāb Sharqī.
Yūnus ibn Maysarah narrated: I asked him, “Abū al-Aswad, how many years have passed over you?” He replied, “I remember al-ʿUzzā being worshipped in the village of my people. (5)”
It is said that he also related: “I told my people, ‘List me among those going out to battle.’ They answered, ‘You have grown old.’ I said, ‘Glory be to Allah! Write my name down—where else will my place be among the Muslims?’ They responded, ‘Since you insist, then break your fast and strengthen yourself against the enemy.’ He said, ‘I never thought I would live long enough to be taken to task over myself. By Allah, I shall neither satiate it with food nor allow it the comfort of sleep until it meets Allah. (6)’”
