42 – Abū Maysarah ʿAmr ibn Shurāḥbīl al-Hamdānī* (recorded by Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī) – a Kufan.
He narrated from ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, and others.
He was the imam of the mosque of Banū Wādiʿa and counted among the devout, saintly worshippers.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Wāʾil, al-Shaʿbī, al-Qāsim ibn Mukhaimarah, Abū Isḥāq, and Muḥammad ibn al-Muntashir.
Isrāʾīl ibn Yūnus said: Whenever Abū Maysarah received his stipend he would give part of it in charity; when he reached his family and they counted it, they always found it undiminished. He said to his nephews, “Will you not do the same?” They replied, “If we knew it would not decrease, we would.” He said, “I do not set conditions on my Lord.” (1)
Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated—from al-Aʿmash—from Shaqīq—who said: “I have never seen a Hamdānī whose skin I would rather be in than ʿAmr ibn Shurāḥbīl.” (2)
ʿĀṣim narrated—from Abū Wāʾil—who said: “No woman of Hamdān has ever given birth to the like of Abū Maysarah.” It was asked, “Not even Masrūq?!” He replied, “Not even Masrūq.” (2)
Abū Isḥāq said: “I saw on Abū Maysarah and his companions cloaks (ṭayālisah) with long silk buttons.”
He also related that Abū Maysarah stipulated in his will that a layer of qasab (reeds) or ḥarādiyy (thorny branches) be placed over his lahd (side-niche grave). (3)
And he said: “It gladdens my soul that I shall leave behind neither a single dinar nor any children.” (4)
