safely and under protection, let him do so. Whatever is destined is close at hand; you have been hasty with the affair before its time. By Him in whose hand is my soul, there are men still in your loins who will one day fight on the side of the Household of Muhammad. The cause of the Household of Muhammad is not hidden even from the polytheists; their cause is postponed for a later time.
He (the narrator) said: So he remained with nine hundred men, entered the state of iḥrām for ʿumrah, and garlanded sacrificial animals. When we wished to enter the Sacred Precinct, the cavalry of Ibn al-Zubayr confronted us and barred our entry. Muhammad sent word to him, saying, “I set out with no desire to fight, and I return with no desire to fight. Allow us to enter, that we may complete our rites; we will then depart from you.” Ibn al-Zubayr refused.
He continued: We had the garlanded camels with us, so we went back to Medina and remained there until al-Ḥajjāj arrived and killed Ibn al-Zubayr. Al-Ḥajjāj then marched to Iraq; once he had gone, we set out, performed our rites, and I saw lice falling from Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah.
He said: We returned to Medina, where he stayed for three months and then passed away (1).

Al-Wāqidī said: Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah narrated to us from Zayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, who said:

ʿAbd al-Malik added, “By Allah, people have never seen the like of the man who wielded it! Muhammad, grant me this sword.”
Muhammad replied, “Let whichever of us has the better claim to it take it.”
ʿAbd al-Malik said, “If you have kinship, all of us have kinship.”
So Muhammad handed the sword to him and then said, “Commander of the Believers, this man”—pointing to al-Ḥajjāj—“has treated me with contempt and harmed me. Had it been a matter of five dirhams he would have sent for me about it.”
ʿAbd al-Malik said, “He has no authority over you.”
When Muhammad withdrew, ʿAbd al-Malik said to al-Ḥajjāj, “Catch up with him and remove his grievance.”
Al-Ḥajjāj caught up with him and said, “The Commander of the Believers has sent me to dispel your resentment; may nothing that displeases you remain.”
Muhammad replied, “Woe to you, Ḥajjāj! Fear Allah and beware of Him. Every morning Allah has for every servant…"
