According to Muḥammad ibn Jubayr, the one who actually conducted the Pilgrimage was Ibn al-Zubayr.
Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah also performed the ḥajj with the al-Khashabiyyah—four thousand men carrying only wooden staves (1). They camped in the left ravine of Minā. Fearing civil strife, I went to Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah and said:
“Abū al-Qāsim, fear Allah. We are in a sacred sanctuary, in a holy land; the people around us are Allah’s guests, so do not spoil their pilgrimage.”
He replied, “By Allah, that is not my intention. I am only defending myself, and I seek authority only so that not even two people will dispute over me. Go to Ibn al-Zubayr and speak with him; you must also go to Najdah and speak with him.”
I went to Ibn al-Zubayr, who said, “Should I step down? The people have already gathered around me and pledged allegiance, whereas those men are sowers of discord.”
I said, “The best course for you is to hold your hand.”
He answered, “I will.”
Next I went to Najdah the Ḥarūrī and found him among his followers, with ʿIkrimah beside him. I said, “Ask permission for me to see him.” He went in, and before long (2) I was admitted. I greeted Najdah respectfully and spoke to him. He said, “For me to begin fighting anyone—never.”
I replied, “I have found that the other two men do not wish to fight you, either.”
Then I went to the Umayyad supporters and spoke with them. They said, “We will not fight.” Among all those encampments I found none more composed than the companions of Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah.
I remained beside him that evening, and when the sun had set he turned to me and said, “Abū Saʿīd, move on.” I moved on with him; he was the first to depart (3).
Khalīfah (4) relates: In the year 65 AH Ibn al-Zubayr invited Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah to pledge allegiance to him, but he refused. Ibn al-Zubayr therefore besieged him in the ravine of the Banū Hāshim and threatened them, until al-Mukhtār sent Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jadalī to Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah with four thousand men in the year 66 AH. They remained with him until al-Mukhtār was killed in Ramaḍān of the year 67 AH (5).
