Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Wāqidī related: ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar told us, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī ʿAwn:

Ibn al-Hanafiyyah said, “I visited ʿAbd al-Malik; he satisfied my needs and I took my leave. When I was almost out of sight, he called after me, ‘Abū al-Qāsim, Abū al-Qāsim!’

“I turned back and he said, ‘Indeed Allah knows that on the day you treated the Shaykh as you did, you wronged him’—meaning the Day of the Dār, when he seized Marwān and pressed (1) him with his cloak.

“ʿAbd al-Malik added, ‘I was watching that day, and I still wore my hair in a single braid (2).’ ”

Ibrāhīm ibn Bashshār reported: Ibn ʿUyaynah told us—he heard al-Zuhrī say:

A man asked Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, “Why would your father send you into situations in which he never sent al-Ḥasan or al-Ḥusayn?”

He replied, “They were his two cheeks, whereas I was his hand; he would protect his cheeks with his hands (3).”

Aḥmad ibn Salāmah informed us, through Ibn Kulayb, Ibn Bayān, Ibn Makhlad, Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār, Ibn ʿArafah, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAmr, and Mundhir al-Thawrī, from Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who said:

“It is no mark of wisdom if a man fails to live decently with someone whose company he cannot avoid, until Allah grants him relief—or, he said, a way out (4).”

From Ibn al-Hanafiyyah as well: “Whoever holds his own soul in honour attaches no value to worldly things.”

And from him: “Allah has made Paradise the price for your souls, so do not sell them for anything else (5).”

Al-Wāqidī also transmitted through his chain:

“When the news of Muʿāwiyah’s death reached Medina, al-Ḥusayn, Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, and Ibn al-Zubayr were there, while Ibn ʿAbbās was in Mecca. So al-Ḥusayn set out …”

(1) The verb daghatahu means “he strangled him until he died.” When the middle consonant is the undotted ‘a (ʿ), it conveys “he pushed him violently.” See Lisān al-ʿArab. Ibn Saʿd records the form daʿthahu, with a final thāʾ, meaning “he slammed him to the ground.” (2) Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabaqāt, 5:112. (3) Ibn ʿAsākir, Tārīkh Dimashq, 15:368; al-Dhahabī, Tārīkh al-Islām, 3:296, which reads “with his hand.” (4) Ibn ʿAsākir, Tārīkh Dimashq, 15:368 b. (5) Ibid.
