Muhammad ibn Saʿd said, “His birth took place during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (1).”
Al-Waqidi narrated: Ibn Abī al-Zinād told us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from Fāṭimah bint al-Mundhir, from Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr, who said:
“I saw the mother of Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah—she was a dark-skinned Sindhi woman. She had been a slave of Banū Ḥanīfah, though she did not belong to their lineage. Khalid reached a settlement with them over the captives, but he did not make peace with them concerning their own persons (2).”
Abū ʿUmar al-Ḍarīr and al-Bukhārī gave him the kunyah Abū al-Qāsim.
Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah related—from Munḏir—that he heard Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah say:
“It was a special concession granted to ʿAlī. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if a child is born to me after you, may I name him after you and adopt your kunyah?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ (3)”
Yazīd ibn Hārūn said: Abū Mālik al-Ashjaʿī informed us; Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd narrated:
“He was with Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah in the mountain pass, and one day I said to him, ‘O Abū ʿAbd Allah’ (4)—addressing him with that kunyah.”
Al-Nasāʾī and Abū Aḥmad likewise transmitted—and Ibn Ḥumayd reported: Salamah al-Abraş narrated to us, from Zuhayr, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd:
“I said to Ibn al-Musayyib, ‘How old were you during ʿUmar’s caliphate?’ He replied, ‘I was born when two years of his caliphate remained.’ I mentioned this to Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, and he said, ‘That is when I was born as well.’ (5)
