- Shurayḥ ibn Hāniʾ, Abū al-Miqdām al-Ḥārithī * (M, 4)
A Madhḥijī by lineage, a Kufan by residence; a jurist, a righteous man, and a companion of ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him.
He transmitted ḥadith from: his father, ʿAlī, ʿUmar, ʿĀʾishah, Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, and Abū Hurayrah.
Those who narrated from him include his two sons, Muḥammad and al-Miqdām, as well as al-Shaʿbī, al-Qāsim ibn Mukhaimarah, Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, and Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq.
Abū al-Miqdām (M) said: “I asked ʿĀʾishah about wiping over the khuffayn (leather socks). She replied, ‘Go to ʿAlī, for he is more knowledgeable about that …,’” and he went on to cite the ḥadith (1).
He was present at the Arbitration of the Two Judges, and he later visited Muʿāwiyah, interceding on behalf of Kathīr ibn Shihāb; Muʿāwiyah granted his release.
Mujālid narrates—from al-Shaʿbī, from Ziyād ibn al-Naḍr—that ʿAlī dispatched Abū Mūsā with four hundred men, placing Shurayḥ ibn Hāniʾ in command, and that Ibn ʿAbbās accompanied them to lead the prayers on the march to Dūmat al-Jandal.
