Ḥajjāj ibn Abī ʿUthmān transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn:
Whenever people asked Shurayḥ, “How did you wake this morning?” he would answer, “I woke up while half the people are angry with me.”

Ḥammād ibn Salamah reported: Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb narrated to us from Ibrāhīm that Shurayḥ said, “Never have I raised my voice at a litigant, nor have I ever prompted a litigant with an argument.” (1)

Ibn ʿUyaynah related from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid:
A dispute over a kitten was brought before Shurayḥ. One woman said, “It is the offspring of my cat,” while the other insisted, “No, it is the offspring of my cat.”
Shurayḥ ruled, “Place the kitten beside this woman’s cat: if the cat settles, lets her milk flow, and stretches herself out to nurse, then it belongs to her; but if she hisses, bolts, and her fur bristles, then it is not hers.”
In another wording: “and her fur stands on end,” meaning it fluffs up.
His expression “stretches herself out” (isbaṭarrat) means that she lies down to suckle. (2)

Ibn ʿAwn, from Ibrāhīm, said:
A man confessed before Shurayḥ and then tried to deny his confession. Shurayḥ told him, “The son of your maternal aunt’s sister has already testified against you.” (3)

Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī said:
An ulcer appeared on Shurayḥ’s thumb. Someone asked, “Will you not show it to a physician?” He replied, “The One who produced it will cure it.”

Al-Shaʿbī related that Shurayḥ said:
“When I am afflicted by a calamity, I praise Allah for it four times: I praise Him that it was not greater than it was; I praise Him for granting me patience to bear it; I praise Him for guiding me to the istirjāʿ (the words, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return’) in hope of reward; and I praise Him for not making the calamity in my religion.”

Mughīrah said: “Shurayḥ had a small room in which he would seclude himself every Friday, and no one knew what he did there.”
