al-Umlūki reported, from Abū al-Zāhiriyyah, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who said:
“I once entered upon Abū al-Dardāʾ while a large dish of meat was set before him. He said, ‘Sit down and eat, for a church in our district has sent this to us from the animals its people slaughtered for it.’ So I ate with him.
From this it is understood that meat slaughtered for a place of worship is lawful; only that which is slaughtered upon an idol’s stone altar is forbidden to us.
Baqiyyah said: ʿAlī ibn Zubayd al-Khawlānī narrated to us, from Marthad ibn Sumayy, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr:
‘Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah wrote to his father: “Jubayr ibn Nufayr has circulated in my territory a ḥadīth on account of which the people have abandoned the Quran.”’
He (Muʿāwiyah) therefore summoned Jubayr. When Jubayr arrived, Muʿāwiyah read Yazīd’s letter to him. Jubayr acknowledged part of it and disavowed part of it.
Muʿāwiyah said, ‘I shall beat you a beating that will make you a deterrent for those who come after you.’
Jubayr replied, ‘O Muʿāwiyah, do not behave tyrannically toward me. The world’s pillars have snapped, its pegs have sunk, yet its lovers still cling to it.’
Then Abū al-Dardāʾ came, took Jubayr by the hand, and said, ‘If Jubayr has indeed spoken those words, Abū al-Dardāʾ spoke them before him; and had Jubayr wished to tell you that he heard them from me, he could have done so. If you strike him, Allah will strike you with a calamity that will leave your dwellings a desolate waste.’
This report is objectionable. Jubayr is not mentioned at all during the lifetime of Abū al-Dardāʾ; rather, at that time he was a young man still seeking knowledge. Moreover, at the end of Abū al-Dardāʾ’s life Yazīd was a child of five years. Perhaps, however, ⦗1⦘ something of that nature did occur.
Among those from whom Jubayr transmitted were Mālik ibn Yakhāmir al-Saksakī, Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, and Umm al-Dardāʾ.
He and Kathīr ibn Murrah were counted among the leading Successor imams in Ḥimṣ and Damascus.
More than one authority declared both of them reliable.
Abū ʿUbayd and Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī said: ‘Jubayr ibn Nufayr died in the year five…’
