Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

It was also recorded by Ibn Manda in Maʿrifat al-Ṣaḥābah (1).

Mubashshir ibn Ismāʿīl—through Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zibriqān—through Usāmah ibn Abī ʿAṭāʾ—reported:
“I was with al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr when Suwayd ibn Ghafalah entered. Al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr said to him, ‘Has it not reached me that you prayed with the Prophet ﷺ once?’ He replied, ‘Not once, but many times. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the adhān (call to prayer), it was as though he no longer recognised anyone among the people.’

This report, like the one before it, has a weak chain of transmission (2).

Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah said: Al-Hārith ibn Muslim ibn al-Ruḥayl al-Juʿfī narrated to us, saying, ‘Al-Ruḥayl and Suwayd ibn Ghafalah arrived just after the burial of the Messenger of Allah (3) ﷺ had been completed.’

Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif—through ʿImrān ibn Muslim—related:
“A man from the entourage of al-Ḥajjāj passed by the muʿadhdhin of the Juʿfī tribe while he was giving the adhān, and he went to al-Ḥajjāj and said, ‘Are you not amazed that I heard the Juʿfī muʿadhdhin making the adhān at the peak of midday heat?’

So al-Ḥajjāj sent for him, and he was brought. He asked, ‘What is this?’ The man replied, ‘It is not my own doing; Suwayd ibn Ghafalah is the one who instructed me to do it.’

Al-Ḥajjāj then sent for Suwayd, and when he was brought he asked, ‘What is this prayer?’ Suwayd answered, ‘I prayed it with Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān.’ When he mentioned ʿUthmān, al-Ḥajjāj—who had been reclining—sat up and said, ‘You prayed it with ʿUthmān?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’

Al-Ḥajjāj said, ‘Then do not lead your people in prayer, and when you return to them, curse so-and-so (4).’

Suwayd replied, ‘Yes—hearing and obedience.’

When he turned to leave, al-Ḥajjāj said:

(1) Sufyan ibn Waki is weak, and Amr ibn Shumr: al-Bukhari deemed his hadith munkar (unacceptable); al-Nasai, al-Daraqutni and others ruled him matruk al-hadith (abandoned), and some even charged him with fabrication. (2) The author states in al-Mizan that the chain Usama ibn Ata from Suwayd ibn Ghafala is not authentic. (3) For another transmission of the report, see al-Isaba, entry “Rahil,” no. 2838. (4) Tarikh al-Islam reads “Aliya” in place of “so-and-so.”
