ʿAbd Allāh al-Kātib informed us; likewise Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge, Abū Ghālib Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, and Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭarāʾifī, who said:
Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Muslimah informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Zuhrī informed us; Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Firyābī narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us; and al-Aʿmash narrated to us (ḥ).
Al-Firyābī said: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah, from Masrūq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There are four traits; whoever possesses them is a hypocrite—ʿUthmān added: through and through—and whoever has one of them has within him a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; when he makes a covenant, he betrays it; and when he argues, he behaves outrageously.”
Muslim also recorded it (1) through Abū Bakr with this same chain.
Mujālid reported from al-Shaʿbī that Masrūq said, “For me to settle a single case in accordance with the truth is dearer to me than standing guard for a year in the path of Allah—or, he said, than undertaking a year-long campaign.”
Abū al-Ḍuḥā said: Masrūq was asked about a line of poetry, and he replied, “I would hate to find poetry written in my record.”
Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, through Abū al-Ḍuḥā, from Masrūq, said: “I once prayed behind Abū Bakr.”
