Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

one who never refused his daughter anything.

Al-Shaʿbī said: She came down to him and pleaded, “Father, break your fast and drink.”

He replied, “What is it you want for me, my daughter?”

She answered, “Kindness.”

He said, “My dear child, I am only seeking kindness for myself on a Day whose span is fifty thousand years.”

Abū Nuʿaym said: He died in 62 AH.

Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Ibn Saʿd, and Ibn Numayr said: He died in 63 AH.

ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd reported: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muntašir, from his father, that Masrūq would never accept payment for serving as a judge, and he used to interpret the verse, “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth…” (al-Tawbah 9:111).

Al-Aʿmash—through Muslim—from Masrūq, said:
“It is enough knowledge for a person that he fears Allah Most High, and it is enough ignorance for a person that he is impressed with his own deeds.”

Manṣūr—through Hilāl ibn Yasāf—said that Masrūq declared:
“Whoever wishes to know the knowledge of the first and the last, the knowledge of this world and the Hereafter, let him recite Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah.”

I say: Masrūq said this by way of hyperbole, because of the greatness of what the surah contains concerning the affairs of both abodes.

The meaning of his words, ‘let him recite al-Wāqiʿah,’ is that he should read it with reflection, contemplation, and attentiveness, and not be like a donkey carrying books.

ʿAmr ibn Murrah—through al-Shaʿbī—said:
Whenever it was said to Masrūq, “You were slow to support ʿAlī and to take part in his engagements,” he would answer:
“Tell me: if, when you had stood facing one another in battle, an angel had descended among you and proclaimed, ‘Do not kill one another; Allah is ever Merciful to you’ (al-Nisāʾ 4:29), would that have held you back?”
They would reply, “Yes.”
He would then say, “By Allah, a noble angel did indeed bring down that verse on the tongue of your Prophet, and it is a decisive ruling that nothing has abrogated.” (1)
