Mansūr narrated on the authority of Ibrāhīm:
“The disciples of Ibn Masʿūd who used to teach people the Qur’an, instruct them in the Sunnah, and whose legal opinions the community followed were six: ʿAlqamah, al-Aswad, Masrūq, ʿUbaydah, Abū Maysarah—ʿAmr ibn Shurahbīl—and al-Ḥārith ibn Qays.
Israʾīl related from Ghālib Abū al-Hudhayl:
I said to Ibrāhīm, ‘Was ʿAlqamah superior or al-Aswad?’
He replied, ‘ʿAlqamah—and he was present at Ṣiffīn.’
Ibn ʿAwn said: I asked al-Shaʿbī about ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad. He said, ‘Al-Aswad fasted often, spent the nights in prayer, and performed many pilgrimages; as for ʿAlqamah, though he travelled at a slow pace, he would still catch up with those who hurried.’
Murrah al-Hamdānī said: ‘ʿAlqamah was one of the rabbānīyīn, and he was childless; no offspring were born to him.’
Ibrāhīm narrated from him: ‘I prayed behind ʿUmar for two years.’
Mughīrah narrated from Ibrāhīm that ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad used to travel with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.
Al-Shaʿbī said: ‘Of all the people, ʿAlqamah was the one who knew Ibn Masʿūd most intimately.’ (1)
Al-Aʿmash narrated from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah:
ʿAbd Allāh was once brought a drink and said, ‘Give it to ʿAlqamah; give it to Masrūq.’ All of them replied, ‘I am fasting.’ So he recited, ‘They fear a Day on which hearts and eyes will be overturned’ (Qur’an 24:37).
Ibrāhīm also said: ‘ʿAlqamah used to complete a reading of the Qur’an every five nights.’
ʿAlqamah said: ‘Lengthen the repetition of hadith so that it does not fade.’ (2)
Al-Aʿmash narrated from Shaqīq:
‘Ibn Ziyād would see me in the company of Masrūq and say, “When you return, meet me.” So I went to ʿAlqamah and he said, “Whatever of their worldly portion you fail to obtain, they will surely obtain …”’
