He also narrated from his grandfather, and he transmitted from the Truthful One, Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, that he accompanied him in performing the isolated Hajj. He further related from ʿUmar and ʿAlī, and he heard (hadith) in Yemen from Muʿādh.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad said, “My father would prostrate while wrapped in a burnus of tayālisah cloth, keeping his hands inside it—or inside his other garments.”
Ibn Abī Khālid said, “I saw al-Aswad wearing a black turban whose tail hung down his back, and I noticed that his head and beard were dyed a yellowish color.”
I read to Isḥāq ibn Ṭāriq—who reported to you—while Ibn Khalīl informed us; Abū al-Makārim al-Taymī informed us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Abū Bakr ibn Mālik narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, who said:
“Al-Aswad performed eighty pilgrimages, a total made up of both Hajj and ʿUmrah.”
With this same chain to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣandal narrated to us; Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, from Maymūn, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, who said:
“In Ramadan al-Aswad would complete the Qur’an every two nights. He slept between Maghrib and ʿIshā, and outside Ramadan he would finish the Qur’an every six nights.”
Ibn ʿAwn said: “Al-Shaʿbī was asked about al-Aswad ibn Yazīd and replied, ‘He was ever fasting, ever standing (in night prayer), and ever making pilgrimage.’”
Ibrāhīm said: “At times al-Aswad would enter iḥrām from the plain of Arzam (1).”
Jābir al-Juʿfī related from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad that he said, “I never heard al-Aswad, when raising his voice for the talbiyah, designate it a Hajj or an ʿUmrah at all; he would simply say, ‘Allah knows my intention.’”
Abū Isḥāq said: “In his talbiyah al-Aswad used to say, ‘Here I am, O Forgiver of sins!’”
Among the baseless reports of Mūsā ibn ʿUmayr—he alone transmits it from al-Ḥakam, from Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī—
(1) A stretch of open ground outside Kūfah used as a campsite for entering iḥrām.
