Ḍamrah narrated, from al-Sarī ibn Yaḥyā, from Qatādah, who said:
“From the very day he was buried, Harim’s grave was showered with rain, and grass began to grow upon it.”
13 – al-Aswad ibn Yazid ibn Qays, Abū ʿAmr al-Nakhaʿī (ʿ)
The imam, the exemplar, Abū ʿAmr al-Nakhaʿī, the Kufan. It is also said that his kunyah was Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
He was the brother of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazid, the father of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Aswad, the nephew of ʿAlqamah ibn Qays, and the maternal uncle of Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī. Such were a household counted among the foremost in knowledge and righteous action.
Al-Aswad was a mukhaḍram—he lived through both the pre-Islamic period and the rise of Islam.
He transmitted hadith from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, Bilāl, Ibn Masʿūd, ʿĀʾishah, Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, and others besides them.
Those who narrated from him include his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, his brother, Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, ʿUmārah ibn ʿUmayr, Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, al-Shaʿbī, and many more.
In stature, knowledge, reliability, and age he was the peer of Masrūq; people used to cite the worship of both men as a paradigm to emulate.
Ibn Saʿd (1) said: “It was reported that he carried the bridal gift of Umm ʿAlqamah to her on behalf of Qays…”
