Sharik narrated, on the authority of Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from ʿAbd al-Raḥman ibn Abī Laylā, who said:
On the day of Ṣiffīn a man from Syria called out, “Is Uways al-Qaranī among you?”
We replied, “Yes. What do you want with him?”
He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Uways al-Qaranī is the best of the Followers in excellence.’ (1)”
He then wheeled his mount and joined the ranks of ʿAlī’s companions—may Allah be pleased with him— (2).
This report was transmitted by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, from ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm al-Awdi, who related it to us from Sharik.
Some reliable transmitters added: from Yazid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, who said, “He was found among those killed at Ṣiffīn.”
We were also informed by Abū al-Makārim al-Taymī; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Hudhayl narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Abān al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us; ʿAmr—a Kufan shaykh—narrated to us; from Abū Sinān, who said: I heard Ḥumayd ibn Ṣāliḥ say: I heard Uways al-Qaranī say:
“The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Safeguard my honor concerning my Companions, for one of the signs of the Hour is that the latter part of this community will curse its first part. When that happens, wrath will descend upon the earth and its people. Whoever lives to see that should place his sword upon his shoulder and then meet his Lord—exalted is He—as a martyr; and whoever fails to do so has only himself to blame.’ (3)”
This ḥadith is extremely munkar, its chain is obscure, and Aḥmad ibn Muʿāwiyah is unsound.
It is also narrated from ʿAlqamah ibn Marthad, from ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “By the intercession of Uways, a number of people equal to the tribes of Rabīʿah and Muḍar will enter Paradise.” (4)
