Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

It was cited by al-Ismāʿīlī in the Musnad of ʿUmar.
As for Muḥammad ibn Miḥṣan—also called al-ʿUkāshī—he is discarded (1).

I was informed through Abū al-Makārim al-Taymī; he related to us from Abū ʿAlī al-Muqriʾ; he in turn related to us from the ḥāfiẓ Abū Nuʿaym, who said:

Among the highest tier of the Successors stands the leader of the devotees and the exemplar of the elect ascetics—ʿUways ibn ʿĀmir al-Qaranī. The Prophet ﷺ foretold his coming and commended him … until Abū Nuʿaym, in the biographical entry, says:

It was also transmitted by al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim from Abū Hurayrah with additional wording that no one corroborated; and no one narrated it except Makhlad ibn Yazīd, from Nawfal ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from him.

Part of that wording states:

They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, who is Uways?’
He replied: ‘He is light-eyed, with tawny hair, broad-shouldered, of moderate height, brown-skinned—indeed deeply brown. He inclines his chin to his chest, keeps his gaze fixed on the place of his prostration, and rests his right hand upon his left. He recites the Quran and weeps over himself. He owns only two worn garments; no one pays him any heed. He fastens a woollen waist-cloth around himself and wears a woollen cloak. Unknown on earth yet renowned in heaven, were he to swear by Allah, Allah would certainly fulfil it. Beneath his left shoulder is a white patch. On the Day of Resurrection it will be announced to the worshippers, “Enter Paradise,” but it will be said to Uways, “Remain and intercede,” whereupon Allah will allow him to intercede for people equal in number to the tribes of Rabīʿah and Muḍar.

“O ʿUmar, O ʿAlī, when you encounter him, ask him to seek forgiveness for you—may Allah forgive you both.”’

They searched for him for ten years without success. In the final year of ʿUmar’s life he ascended Mount Abū Qubays and cried in a loud voice: ‘Pilgrims from Yemen! Is there among you an Uways of Murād?’

An elderly man stood and said, ‘We do not know who Uways is, but I have a nephew called Uways—he is so obscure in reputation, so poor in wealth, and so insignificant in status that we would not think to bring him before you. Right now he is tending our camels among the arāk trees of ʿArafāt.’

(1) He is Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, traced back to his grandfather Muhsin and therefore also called Muhammad ibn Muhsin. Al-Bukhari judged his reports “munkar al-hadith” (unacceptable); Ibn Maʿin labeled him “a liar”; and al-Daraqutni asserted that he “fabricates hadith.” See: al-Mizan, 3:476; 4:25.
