Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān reported: al-Jurayrī told us,
“When ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh—known as Ibn ʿAbd Qays—was sent away, his brothers escorted him. When he reached the rear of the Mirbad market he said, ‘I am going to supplicate, so say “āmīn”: O Allah, whoever informed against me, lied about me, drove me from my city, and separated me from my brothers—then multiply his wealth, preserve his health, and prolong his life.’ (1)
Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said: When ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Qays was dispatched to Syria he exclaimed, ‘Praise be to Allah who has caused me to travel mounted.’
Qatādah said: When ʿĀmir was on his death-bed he wept. He was asked, ‘What makes you weep?’ He replied, ‘I do not weep out of dread of death or attachment to this world; I weep for the thirst of the midday fasts and for standing in prayer at night.’ (2)
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurasānī related—from his father—that the grave of ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Qays is in Jerusalem. It was also said that he died during the reign of Muʿāwiyah.
