A report of similar purport was transmitted by al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab, on the authority of Abū Maʿshar, from the clan among whom Zayd lived; he cited Zayd as saying:
“Fasten my waist-wrapper firmly upon me, for I must plead my case; lay my cheek upon the earth and withdraw from me quickly.” (1)
Al-Thawrī narrated—through Mukhawwal, from al-ʿAyzar ibn Ḥurayth, from Zayd ibn Ṣuḥān—that he said:
“Do not wash the blood from me, nor remove any garment save the two leather socks. Bury me in the ground in a simple grave, for I shall have to dispute and argue on the Day of Resurrection.” (2)
ʿAmmār al-Duhnī reported that Zayd said:
“Bury me and my mother’s son in a single grave, and do not wash the blood from either of us, for we are a people who will contend.” (3)
It was said that his brother Sayḥān was killed alongside him, and the two of them were buried in one grave. Another report states that he ordered his copy of the Quran to be interred with him. Ibn Saʿd recorded this (4) with a broken chain of transmission and then remarked: “He was trustworthy and related few hadiths.”
