Then it occurred to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to comfort his Companions, so he dismounted and began to say:
“Jundub—and what shall make you know Jundub? …
and the maimed yet virtuous one is Zayd!”
Someone said, “Messenger of Allah, we heard you tonight uttering such-and-such words.”
He replied, “Two men in this community: one of them will strike a blow that separates truth from falsehood, and the other will have his hand cut off in the cause of Allah; thereafter the last part of his body will follow its first.”
Al-Ajlaḥ commented, “As for Jundub, he killed the sorcerer; and as for Zayd, his hand was severed on the Day of Jalulā, and he was killed on the Day of the Camel.” ⦗1⦘
Al-Aʿmash narrated from Ibrāhīm: Zayd ibn Ṣuḥān was once teaching when a Bedouin said, “Your speech pleases me, but your hand unsettles me.” Zayd replied, “Do you not see that it is the left one?” The man said, “By Allah, I do not know whether they cut off the right hand or the left.” Zayd then said, “Allah has spoken the truth: ‘The Bedouins are more intense in unbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely to remain ignorant of the limits that Allah has revealed’ (Q 9:98).” Al-Aʿmash added that Zayd’s hand was severed on the day of Nahāwand. ⦗2⦘
Hammād ibn Salamah narrated from Abū al-Tayyāḥ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Hudhayl, that a delegation from Kufa came to ʿUmar, with Zayd ibn Ṣuḥān among them. A man from Syria arrived seeking reinforcements, whereupon ʿUmar said, “O people of Kufa! You are the treasure of the Muslims; if the people of Basra ask you for support, give it to them, and if the people of Syria ask you for support, give it to them.” ʿUmar then arranged a mount for Zayd and said, “People of Kufa, treat Zayd in this way, or I shall punish you.” ⦗3⦘
