He is also the one who penned the line:
“The slave is corrected with the staff,
whereas the free man is restrained by a word of censure.” (1)
The author of al-Mirʾāh relates that Ibn Mufarrigh died in 69 AH.
130 – ʿAmr ibn Salamah Abū Burayd al-Jarmī * (B, D, N)
It is also said that his kunya was Abū Yazīd. He is the youth who used to lead his tribe in prayer during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ while he was still a boy. (2)
His father was a Companion and a delegate to the Prophet.
It has likewise been reported that ʿAmr accompanied his father on that delegation and that he himself saw the Prophet—Allah knows best.

(2) Al-Bukhārī reports (Ṣaḥīḥ, 8/18, Book of Maghāzī, chapter: The Prophet’s stay in Mecca at the Conquest) through the isnād: Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb — Ḥammād ibn Zayd — Ayyūb — Abū Qilābah — ʿAmr ibn Salamah. Abū Qilābah said to me: “Will you not meet him and ask him?” I met him and he related: “We lived beside the route travellers took. Whenever riders passed we would ask, ‘What news, what news—who is this man?’ They would reply, ‘He claims that Allah sent him and revealed to him such-and-such.’ I memorised their words as though they were lodged in my heart. The Arab tribes postponed accepting Islam until the Conquest, saying, ‘Leave him and his people; if he prevails over them, he is a true prophet.’
When the envoy arrived he said, ‘By Allah, I have come to you from the Prophet in truth. He instructs: perform such-and-such prayer at such-and-such time; when the time comes, let one of you give the adhān, and let the one who knows the most Qurʾān lead.’ They looked around and found none who knew more Qurʾān than I, owing to what I had learnt from the travellers, so they put me forward although I was only six or seven years old. I wore a cloak which, when I prostrated, would ride up and expose me. A woman of the clan said, ‘Will you not cover the backside of your reciter?’ So they bought… (the narration continues).
وَهُوَ القَائِلُ هَذَا البَيْتَ:
العَبْدُ يُقْرَعُ بِالعَصَا ... وَالحُرُّ تَكْفِيْهِ المَلاَمَهْ (١)
وَنَقَلَ صَاحِبُ (المِرْآةِ) : أَنَّ ابْنَ مُفَرِّغٍ مَاتَ سَنَةَ تِسْعٍ وَسِتِّيْنَ.
١٣٠ - عَمْرُو بنُ سَلِمَةَ أَبُو بُرَيْدٍ الجَرْمِيُّ * (خَ، د، س)
وَقِيْلَ: أَبُو يَزِيْدَ، وَهَذَا الَّذِي كَانَ يَؤُمُّ قَوْمَهُ فِي حَيَاةِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَهُوَ صَبِيٌّ (٢) .
وَلأَبِيْهِ: صُحْبَةٌ، وَوِفَادَةٌ.
وَقَدْ قِيْلَ: إِنَّهُ وَفَدَ مَعَ أَبِيْهِ، وَلَهُ رُؤْيَةٌ - فَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ -.

(٢) أخرج البخاري ٨ / ١٨ في المغازي: باب مقام النبي ﷺ بمكة زمن الفتح من طريق سليمان بن حرب، حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن أيوب، عن أبي قلابة، عن عمرو بن سلمة قال: قال لي أبو قلابة: ألا تلقاه فتسأله؟ قال: فلقيته فسألته، فقال: كنا بما ممر الناس، وكان يمر بنا الركبان فنسألهم، ما للناس ما للناس، ما هذا الرجل؟ فيقولون: يزعم أن الله أرسله، أوحى إليه، أوحى الله بكذا، فكنت أحفظ ذاك الكلام، فكأنما يقر في صدري، وكانت العرب تلوم بإسلامهم الفتح، فيقولون: اتركوه وقومه، فإنه إن ظهر عليهم فهو نبي صادق.
فلما قدم قال: جئتكم والله من عند النبي ﷺ حقا، فقال: صلو صلاة كذا في حين كذا وصلوا صلاة كذا في حين كذا، فإذا حضرت الصلاة فليؤذن أحدكم وليؤمكم أكثركم قرآنا، فنظروا، فلم يكن أحد أكثر قرآنا مني، لما كنت أتلقى من الركبان، فقدموني بين أيديهم وأنا ابن ست أو سبع سنين، وكانت علي بردة، كنت إذا سجدت، تقلصت عني، فقالت امرأة من الحي: ألا تغطون عنا است قارئكم؟ فاشتروا، =
