pulpit, and they pelted him with stones until he was kept from leading the prayer; so Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl led the people in prayer that day (1).
The authorities concur that he died in the year 100 AH.
126 – Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ ibn Suraqah ibn ʿAmr al-Anṣārī (a Companion)
The imam, Abū Muḥammad—some say Abū Nuʿaym—al-Anṣārī, of the Khazraj clan, from Medina.
His mother was Jamīlah bint Abī Saʿsaʿah al-Anṣārīyah.
He encountered the Prophet ﷺ and still remembers the day when the Messenger of Allah spat a mouthful of water from a well in their courtyard onto his face; at the time he was four years old (2).

Qadi ʿIyad notes in al-Ilmaʿ, p. 63, and others follow him, that some versions state he was four. Ibn Hajar remarks in Fath al-Bari that, after thorough investigation, he found no explicit wording to this effect in any transmission, except perhaps what is inferred from Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr’s statement in al-Istiʿab that Mahmud recalled the spurt of water “when he was four or five.”
Muslim (no. 265), Book of Mosques, chapter “Concession to miss the congregational prayer for a valid excuse,” transmits the same account through al-Awzaʿi, from al-Zuhri, from Mahmud ibn al-Rabiʿ: “I still remember the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—taking a mouthful of water from a bucket in our house and spouting it into my face.”
المِنْبَرِ، فَحَصَبُوْهُ حَتَّى حِيْلَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الصَّلاَةِ، فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ بنُ سَهْلٍ (١) .

الإِمَامُ، أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ - وَيُقَالُ: أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ - الأَنْصَارِيُّ، الخَزْرَجِيُّ، المَدَنِيُّ.
وَأُمُّهُ: هِيَ جَمِيْلَةُ بِنْتُ أَبِي صَعْصَعَةَ الأَنْصَارِيَّةُ.
أَدْرَكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَعَقَلَ مِنْهُ مَجَّةً مَجَّهَا فِي وَجْهِهِ مِنْ بِئْرٍ فِي دَارِهِم، وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنُ أَرْبَعِ سِنِيْنَ (٢) .

وذكر القاضي عياض في " الالماع " ص: ٦٣ وغيره أن في بعض الروايات أنه كان ابن أربع، قال الحافظ في " الفتح ": ولم أقف على هذا صريحا في شيء من روايات بعد التتبع التام، إلا إن كان ذلك مأخوذا من قول صاحب " الاستيعاب ": إنه عقل المجة وهو ابن أربع سنين أو خمس ".
وأخرجه مسلم (٢٦٥) في المساجد: باب الرخصة في التخلف عن الجماعة لعذر من طريق الاوزاعي، حدثني الزهري، عن محمود الربيع قال: " إني لاعقل مجة مجها رسول الله ﷺ من دلو في دارنا ".
