Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Fasawī said: He died during the reign of Muʿāwiyah.

Khalīfah and others said: He died in the year 58 AH.

Abū ʿUbayd and Abū Ḥassān al-Ziyādī maintained that he died in the year 87 AH.

Ibn Saʿd said: “ʿUbayd Allāh was a year younger than ʿAbd Allāh and had heard from the Prophet ﷺ.”

– Qutham ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Hāshimī

His mother was Umm al-Faḍl, about whom al-Kalbī says she accepted Islam after Khadījah; this has already been noted (1).

122 – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAdī ibn al-Khiyār al-Nawfalī * (B, M)

He is the son of ʿAdī ibn Nawfal ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy ibn Kilāb, a Qurashī of the Nawfal clan.

Born: during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime (2).

His father was one of the ṭulaqāʾ (those pardoned at the Conquest of Mecca), as he mentions in

(2) Sahih al-Bukhari, 7/46 and 7/144, reports that ʿUthman, may Allah be pleased with him, asked him: “Nephew, did you ever meet the Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “No, but some of his knowledge has reached me as the slightest whisper reaches a veiled maiden.” Al-Hafiz explains that by “meeting” ʿUthman meant hearing directly from the Prophet and learning from him; by “seeing,” actually seeing him with discerning eyes. He was not speaking of mere contemporaneity, for the man was born during the Prophet’s lifetime. This is further supported by the story of Hamzah’s martyrdom related by Wahshi ibn Harb in the Maghazi section, 7/282–283.
