Hilāl al-Wazzān said, “I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUkaym say, ‘With this very hand I pledged allegiance to ʿUmar.’
Ibn Fuḍayl narrated—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī, from Ibn Abī Laylā and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUkaym—on the authority of ʿAlī: Whenever the muʾadhdhin proclaimed, ‘I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ he would respond, ‘Indeed, those who denied Muḥammad are willful rejecters.’ (1)
Al-Ḥakam also related that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUkaym to lead the funeral prayer for his mother, and he served as their imam. (2)
Hilāl ibn Abī Ḥumayd reported from Ibn ʿUkaym, who said, ‘I will never again lend support to the shedding of a caliph’s blood after ʿUthmān.’
He was asked, ‘Abū Maʿbad, did you participate in it?’
He replied, ‘I regarded even speaking of his faults as a form of assistance in spilling his blood.’ (3)(4)
Ibn ʿUkaym passed away during the governorship of al-Ḥajjāj.
