A Mention of the Persecution the Idolaters Directed against the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims:
Al-Awzaʿī narrated—from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr—who said: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī related to me—who said: ʿUrwah related to me—that I said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, “Tell me about the most grievous thing the idolaters ever did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He replied, “ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ once approached while the Prophet ﷺ was praying beside the Kaʿbah. He twisted his cloak round his neck and throttled him violently. Abū Bakr came up, seized ʿUqbah’s shoulder and pushed him away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then said, ‘Would you kill a man merely because he says, “My Lord is Allah,” while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?’ (Ghafir 28).” Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
Ibn Isḥāq transmitted it from Yaḥyā ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh.
It was also narrated by Sulaymān ibn Bilāl and ʿAbdah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ; this, however, is an obvious defect in the chain. Yet Muḥammad ibn Faliḥ narrated it from Hishām, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, which supports the first version.
Sufyān and Shuʿbah—Shuʿbah’s wording is cited—both said: Abū Isḥāq related to us: I heard ʿAmr ibn Maymūn recount on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh: “While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in prostration, surrounded by some men of Quraysh, a camel’s entrails lay nearby. They said, ‘Who will take these entrails and dump them on his back?’ ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ fetched them and cast them upon his blessed back ﷺ. Fāṭimah came, removed them from him, and prayed against those who had perpetrated the deed.”
