behind Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq.
He is the one who said: “A letter from the Prophet ﷺ reached us two months before his passing: ‘Do not derive benefit from the hide or sinew of a carcass.’ (1)”
Al-Ḥakam transmitted this ḥadith from him.
He also narrated from ʿUmar, ʿAlī, and Ibn Masʿūd.
Those who reported from him include Hilāl al-Wazzān (2), Muslim al-Juhanī, al-Ḥakam, and a number of others.
Mūsā al-Juhanī related—from the daughter of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUkaym—who said:
“My father loved ʿUthmān, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā loved ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him). They were brothers in faith, and I never heard either of them mention the other’s choice with a single disparaging word, except that I once heard my father say, ‘Had your companion shown patience, the people would have come to him.’ (3)”
It is said that ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUkaym died in the year 88 AH.
Shuʿbah narrated—from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Ibn ʿUkaym—who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to us while I was a young lad in the territory of Juhaynah: ‘Do not make use of the hide or sinew of a carcass.’ (4)”
