the couch; he transmitted reports from Abu Bakr. He (Ibn Maʿīn) also said, “ʿAbd Allah al-Sunābihī appears to have been a Companion.” (1)
Ibn al-Madīnī remarked, “The man from whom Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated the ḥadith about the Basin (al-ḥawḍ) (2) is al-Sunābiḥ ibn al-Asʿar al-Aḥmasī, and he was a Companion.”
(1) Ibn Saʿd, 7/426, lists him among the Companions who settled in Syria. He is the transmitter of the Prophet’s saying: “The sun rises while a devil’s horn accompanies it…”. Malik recorded it in the Muwattaʾ, 1/220; al-Shafiʿi cited it from Malik in al-Risala, no. 874, Ikhtilaf al-hadith, p. 125, and al-Umm, 1/396–397, through the chain: Zayd b. Aslam – ʿAtaʾ b. Yasar – ʿAbd Allah al-Sanabihi – the Messenger of Allah. Zuhayr b. Muhammad also related it from Zayd b. Aslam, from ʿAtaʾ, from ʿAbd Allah al-Sanabihi, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ…”. Zuhayr is not the only authority who explicitly states that al-Sanabihi heard the Prophet; Malik does so as well. Al-Darqutni, in Gharaʾib Malik, transmits it through Ismaʿil b. Abi al-Harith, and Ibn Mandah through Ismaʿil al-Sayyagh, both from Malik; likewise Zuhayr b. Muhammad said, “Zayd b. Aslam narrated this to us…”. Ibn Saʿd, 7/426, gives another chain: Suhayl b. Saʿid – Hafs b. Maysara – Zayd b. Aslam – ʿAtaʾ b. Yasar, who said: “I heard ʿAbd Allah al-Sanabihi say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare: ‘The sun rises from the horn of a devil; when it rises he accompanies it, when it has ascended he leaves it; he accompanies it again at its zenith, leaves it when it declines, accompanies it as it is about to set, and abandons it once it has set. Do not pray during these three periods.’”
Al-Siraj al-Balqini notes in the margin of al-Umm, 1/130: “This hadith of al-Sanabihi appears in our recension of the Muwattaʾ through Yahya b. Yahya, and al-Nasaʾi also records it through Qutayba from Malik. Ibn Majah (no. 1253) cites it through his shaykh Ishaq b. Mansur al-Kawsaj – ʿAbd al-Razzaq – Maʿmar – Zayd b. Aslam – ʿAtaʾ b. Yasar – Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Sanabihi.” Thus Ibn Majah’s wording reads “from Abu ʿAbd Allah”. A number of early scholars claimed that Imam Malik was confused in this report, supposing that the al-Sanabihi in question was ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAsila (Abu ʿAbd Allah). This is incorrect: the transmitter here is a different Companion, distinct from both ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAsila and from al-Sanabah b. al-Aʿsar al-Ahmasi. I have clarified the matter fully in a brief treatise entitled al-Tariqa al-wadhiha fi tabyin al-Sanabihah; it should be consulted, for it is valuable.
(2) Ahmad, 4/351, and Ibn Majah (3944, Kitab al-fitan) transmit, through several chains, the report: Ismaʿil b. Abi Khalid – Qays b. Abi Hazim – al-Sanabah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Indeed I…" (text incomplete).
