- al-Sunābihī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUsaylah al-Murādī * (ʿ)
The jurist, Abū ʿAbd Allah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUsaylah al-Murādī—later known as al-Sunābihī—took up residence in Damascus.
He reached Medina only a few nights after the Prophet ﷺ had passed away and performed the prayer behind al-Ṣiddīq (Abu Bakr).
He transmitted reports from Abu Bakr, as well as from Muʿādh, Bilāl, ʿUbādah, Shaddād ibn Aws, and others.
Those who narrated from him include Marthad al-Yazanī, ʿAdī ibn ʿAdī, ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, Makḥūl, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī, and several others.
Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd also transmitted from him, though he referred to him as ʿAbd Allah.
Ibn Maʿīn said, “He lived on until the time of ʿAbd al-Malik, and he would sit with him on
(=) I note that the sentence “and he was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah” does not appear in the printed edition of Sunan Abi Dawud, but it is found in Sunan al-Nasaʾi, 4/74, Book of Funerals, chapter “Supplication,” through the chain: Suwayd b. Nasr → ʿAbd Allah → Shuʿbah → ʿAmr b. Murrah → ʿAmr b. Maymun, who heard ʿAbd Allah b. Rabiʿah al-Sulami—himself a Companion—report from ʿUbayd b. Khalid al-Sulami that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, established a bond of brotherhood between two men. One of them was killed, and the other died later. We performed the funeral prayer for the latter and the Prophet asked, “What did you say?” They replied, “We prayed: ‘Allahumma, forgive him; Allahumma, have mercy on him; Allahumma, join him with his companion.’ ” The Prophet answered, “Where is his prayer after his companion’s prayer? Where is his deed after his companion’s deed? The distance between them is like that between heaven and earth.” The chain is sound.
