And of those who lived during the Prophetic era:
- ʿAbd Allah ibn Rubayʿah ibn Farqad al-Sulamī * (Abu Dawud; al-Nasāʾī)
It is said that he was a Companion; if that cannot be verified, then his reports are classed as mursal (disconnected).
He also transmitted from Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās, and ʿUbayd ibn Khālid al-Sulamī.
Those who narrated from him include ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, ʿAmr ibn Maymūn al-Awdi, Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir—ʿAbd Allah was the paternal uncle of Manṣūr’s father—ʿAlī ibn al-Aqmar, ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, and others.
He settled in Kūfa.
Shuʿbah reported from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Rubayʿah, adding, “He was a Companion.” Such were his words. (1)
He died sometime after 80 AH.
Rubayʿah—pronounced with a doubled consonant—is one of the simple, standalone personal names.

(1) Sunan al-Nasai, 2/19, Book of the Adhan, chapter “The Adhan of the Shepherd”: reported by Ishaq ibn Mansur, related by ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Shuʿba, from al-Hakam, from Ibn Abi Layla, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Rabiʿa. He said: “I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, when he heard a man calling the adhan. The Prophet repeated the caller’s words, then said, ‘This must be either a shepherd or a man traveling away from his family.’ They looked and found that he was indeed a shepherd.” The chain is sound.
Al-Isaba, 2/305, adds: Ibn al-Mubarak transmitted from Shuʿba that the man “had Companion status.” Al-Bukhari remarks: “No one corroborated Shuʿba on that point.”
Ibn Hajar notes that Abu Dawud (no. 2524) also records the report through Shuʿba → ʿAmr ibn Murra → ʿAmr ibn Maymun → ʿAbd Allah ibn Rabiʿa al-Sulami—who belonged to the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—on the authority of ʿUbayd ibn Khalid al-Sulami, and he then cites the remainder of the hadith…
