Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi
  1. ʿAbd Allah ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Suʿayr al-ʿUdhri – cited by Bukhari, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasaʾi.

He was al-Shaykh, Abu Muhammad al-ʿUdhri, a Medinan and an ally of the clan of Banu Zuhrah.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, once passed his blessed hand over the boy’s head, and he never forgot that moment. (1)

Some say, however, that he was born in the Year of the Conquest and that he later attended the gathering at al-Jabiyah. Yet had his birth truly been in the Year of the Conquest, he would have been too young to be present at al-Jabiyah.

He related hadith from his father, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, and from Jabir, though he was not a prolific narrator.

Among those who transmitted from him were al-Zuhri, his brother ʿAbd Allah, and ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith ibn Zuhrah.

He was a poet, eloquent, and skilled in genealogy.

Malik reported from Ibn Shihab that he used to sit with ʿAbd Allah ibn Thaʿlabah, learning genealogy and other matters from him. When he once asked him about a point of jurisprudence, he replied, “If that is what you are after, then you need to go to Saʿid ibn al-Musayyab.” (2)

I (the author) add: He also narrated from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas and Abu Hurayrah.

Those who narrated from him include Saʿd ibn Ibrahim, the judge of Medina, and ʿAbd al-Hamid ibn Jaʿfar, the last person to transmit from him.

Khalifah ibn Khayyat and others stated that he died in 89 AH.
