Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said, “He was older than Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ.” I add: Ibn Labīd died in 97 AH, though it is also said that he died in 96 AH.
108 – Hāshim ibn ʿUtbah ibn Abī Waqqāṣ al-Zuhrī *
He was better known as al-Mirqāl (1). He was one of ʿAlī’s commanders on the day of Ṣiffīn. Born during the Prophet’s lifetime, he fought at Yarmūk—losing an eye there—and he was present at the conquest of Damascus. On the day of Ṣiffīn he carried Imām ʿAlī’s banner and was killed in that engagement (2). He was renowned for his bravery and boldness—may Allah Most High have mercy on him. Some scholars counted him among the Companions because he lived during the time of the Prophethood.

(1) Ibn Hajar reports in al-Isaba, 3:593—citing al-Dulabi—that he was nicknamed al-Mirqal because he used to yarqil in battle, that is, he moved with great speed; al-irqal denotes a particular kind of rapid advance.
