to Basra; that would have been dearer to me than having ten sons by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ all like ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith.
I say: He was the nephew (through his mother) of Abū Jahl. He was counted among the nobles. He died before Muʿāwiyah, while his father passed away during the caliphate of ʿUmar.
107 – Maḥmūd ibn Labīd ibn ʿUqbah ibn Rāfiʿ al-Anṣārī * (M, 4)
He is Abū Nuʿaym al-Anṣārī, of the Aws, of the clan of Ashhal, a Medinan.
He was born in Medina during the Prophet’s lifetime and transmitted from him a number of hadith that he narrates in mursal form.
He also related reports from ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān, and Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj.
Among those who narrated from him are Bukayr ibn al-Ashajj, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, al-Zuhrī, ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, and others.
Regarding his father the verse of concession (1) was revealed for those who are unable to fast.
Al-Bukhārī said: He is counted among the Companions.

(1) The verse intended here seems to be 2:184 of surat al-Baqara: “wa ʿala alladhina yutiqoonahu fidyatun taʿamu miskeen” (and upon those who are able to fast but choose not to is a ransom: feeding one needy person). I have found no scholar who supports the author’s view on this. See al-Tabari 3/425 ff.; al-Suyuti, al-Durr al-manthur 1/177, 179; Ibn Kathir 1/215.
